How Chromecast works with Snapr

Casting sends the slideshow from a computer's browser to a TV over the local network. Snapr does not run a Chromecast app of its own — you cast the Chrome tab the slideshow is running in, which is why the cast button opens instructions rather than a device picker.

Setting up Chromecast

1Put the laptop and the Chromecast on the same wifi network first. Almost every failed cast is this step.
2Open the slideshow in Chrome, Edge or Brave on the laptop.
3Right-click anywhere on the page and choose Cast. If the right-click menu is missing it, use the ⋮ menu, or Chrome's Save and share → Cast.
4Pick your TV or Chromecast from the list, then press F on the laptop so the cast picture is fullscreen rather than a browser window with tabs.

Chromecast — the specifics

What is actually cast: The browser tab or screen from the computer running the slideshow. There is no separate Snapr receiver app on the TV.
Browsers that can cast: Chrome, Edge and Brave on a computer. Safari and Firefox have no Chromecast support — use AirPlay or HDMI instead.
Receivers that work: Chromecast dongles, Google TV boxes, and TVs with Chromecast built in.
Apple alternative: AirPlay screen mirroring from a Mac, iPhone or iPad: Control Centre → Screen Mirroring → your Apple TV.
Network requirement: TV and computer on the same wifi network and the same subnet. Guest networks with client isolation will hide the TV.
Most reliable option: An HDMI cable from the laptop to the TV. No network involved, no drop-outs, no lag on video slides.

When something goes wrong

The cast menu opens but your TV is not in the list.

The laptop and the Chromecast are on different networks — typically the laptop joined the venue's guest wifi while the TV is on the house network, or the guest network isolates clients from each other. Move the laptop onto the same network the TV uses, or tether the laptop to the same access point. A VPN on the laptop causes the same symptom; turn it off.

Casting works but the picture stutters, especially on video clips.

Tab casting re-encodes and sends the whole screen over wifi, so a busy venue network shows up as stutter. Reduce it by closing other tabs and downloads on the laptop, or skip the network entirely and run an HDMI cable — for a long evening HDMI is the option worth carrying a cable for.

The TV shows the slideshow for a while, then drops back to the TV's home screen.

Either the laptop went to sleep or its wifi power-saving suspended the adapter. Plug the laptop into mains, set sleep to never, and disable the wifi adapter's power saving. Re-cast and it picks up where it left off — the slideshow itself never lost its data connection.

What it is not good for

Casting mirrors a computer's browser tab, so you need a laptop running the slideshow the whole evening — you cannot cast from a phone and then put the phone away, and a congested venue wifi will always look worse than an HDMI cable.
